Edmund Barton is one of the few artists who also specialize in paintings for industry and commerce. One of his major commissions was to record the building of the Sasol Plants at Secunda and his artwork and paintings were using in various forms during the construction. On its completion Fluor the main contractors from the US were presented with two original paintings by the artist. He also did an important commission of the painting of the Ergo gold plant presented to the late Harry Oppenheimer.
Another key commission by the Standard Bank to do a series of paintings of their historic bank buildings led to the artist recording a significant number of other old buildings in South Africa three of which are in the African Museum. A number of calendars were printed and two carried a series of some of the beautiful school buildings that we have in South Africa
